Student throughout Orange County who are interested in animal production and services have an opportunity to attend Colonial High’s Veterinary Animal Science and Services Magnet program. Last year the Colonial High School program was one of the top ranked programs for Florida. Students have traveled to trade shows and competitions throughout the United States. This program is designed to prepare students for employment or advanced training in the veterinary and animal science and services industry. The program focuses on broad transferable skills and stress understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the animal science industry: planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues and health and safety and environmental issues. Classroom, shop and animal laboratory activities are an integral part of this program, including the safe use and care of animal health-care instruments, animal grooming equipment, basic tools, animal retraining equipment, and field equipment. This program works with both small animals from reptiles, canine and feline as well as marine animals and large animals including horses and cattle. In addition, students have the opportunity for Cooperative Education during the summer or 7th period. This part of the program affords the students an opportunity work with industry workers and leaders in the community. Students have worked in veterinary offices, stables, Sea World, wildlife sanctuaries in Geneva and Christmas, Audubon Society in Maitland, Jungle Adventures in Christmas and Gatorland in Kissimmee, Central Florida Zoo in Sanford. Students have also developed their entrepreneurial skills by starting their own business, breeding and raising stock, marketing and selling reptiles, birds and large and small animals. College Credit and Scholarship Eligibility: As a program completer students may receive St. Petersburg Community College credits and become eligible for scholarships including the Florida Gold Seal Scholarship. High School Internships are available during the summer, and during the school year during 7th period and after school. The experience and hours from high school internships that are documented can be used when apply to Veterinary school. The National Academy Foundation Academy of Information Technology magnet offers academic instruction in a wide range of rigorous inter-disciplinary academic regimes. Lucrative business related work experience will be acquired through a student run business, Technology Associates. There are several divisions providing PC support and PC construction, digital and web design service, and multi-media productions. PC programming students will have the opportunity to achieve A+ certification. Students will gain the personal, analytical, technical, and communication skills needed to compete in our technological multi-media society. Colonial High has a partnership with Lockheed Martin for teacher and student support. As a member of the National Academy Foundation, qualified students are eligible for national and local scholarships as well as a vast array of networking opportunities beginning with the student internship at the end of the junior year. Additionally, students in this program may also qualify for Gold Seal Bright Futures scholarship money. This high school magnet is conducive to post-secondary education in one of the following arenas: Career and Technology Education in conjunction with Orange County Public Schools, two year AS or AA degrees as found in local community colleges or four year BS or BA degrees from college or university in information technology or business. The National Academy Foundation Academy of Information Technology magnet promotes the study of digital media and information technology. The new campus combined with state of the art equipment and software, provides an exciting arena where IT magnet students can learn competitive skills that are necessary for success in the fast paced world of technology and telecommunications. The digital media lab includes a cutting edge digital recording studio for radio and television, as well as electronic publications. Students can also receive instruction, which fosters growth toward certification in the following areas: A+ PC Support, CISCO network training, Macromedia Web Design and Visual Basic and Java Programming. This program is affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF). This four-year information technology sequence of courses aligns relevant academic, employment and workplace standards with opportunities to partner with local businesses and post-secondary institutions. Serious students have opportunities to earn dual credits through articulation agreements with Valencia Community College for each of the related IT areas. CHS - Academy of Hospitality and Tourism
Join this exciting academy and enter the world of hospitality and tourism. This program is affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF) This program prepares students for employment in a variety of occupations in the hospitality industry including, but not limited to, front desk agents, reservationists, and food and beverage personnel. The hospitality industry as addressed in this program includes the hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, and other lodging organizations. This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the lodging industry: planning, management, finance, technical and production skills; underlying principles of technology; and labor, community, health and safety, and environmental issues. Students must complete an internship of 200 hours to earn one credit for a Hospitality and Tourism Internship. In addition, college credit for the internship is earned through Valencia Community College [http://valencia.cc.fl.us/asdegrees/] and the University of Central Florida, [http://www.hospitality.ucf.edu/] The Hospitality and Tourism Internship course provides students the opportunity to demonstrate human relations, communications, and employability skills necessary for entry-level employment in the travel and tourism industry.
