Join this exciting academy and enter the world of hospitality and tourism. This program is affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF)

This national connection enables the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Colonial High School to have ties with the major players in the hospitality industry in Central Florida . Students are given an overview of the various components of the industry, an introduction to marketing, and to the various careers available in hospitality and tourism.

This program prepares students for employment in a variety of occupations in the hospitality industry including, but not limited to, front desk agents, reservationists, and food and beverage personnel. The hospitality industry as addressed in this program includes the hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, and other lodging organizations. This program focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the lodging industry: planning, management, finance, technical and production skills; underlying principles of technology; and labor, community, health and safety, and environmental issues.

Students must complete an internship of 200 hours to earn one credit for a Hospitality and Tourism Internship. In addition, college credit for the internship is earned through Valencia Community College [http://valencia.cc.fl.us/asdegrees/] and the University of Central Florida, [http://www.hospitality.ucf.edu/] The Hospitality and Tourism Internship course provides students the opportunity to demonstrate human relations, communications, and employability skills necessary for entry-level employment in the travel and tourism industry. The internship will be a paid work experience in the hospitality or tourism industry.

In addition to the core academic courses, the curriculum includes:

9 th grade: Business Systems Technology (BST) 1 credit (elective)
10 th grade: Hospitality and Tourism I: Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism 1 credit (elective)
11 th grade: Hospitality and Tourism II: Lodging Principles 1 credit (elective)
Summer Hospitality and Tourism Internship 1 credit (elective)
12 th grade: Hospitality and Tourism III : Lodging Applications 1 credit (elective)

Special features include educational field trips to local hospitality and tourism industries from hotels, convention centers, and attractions, a senior trip, membership in the Colonial Travel Club.
