• The ages for truancy intervention have been extended until the age of 18.
• School attendance is mandatory until 18 or graduation.

Reasons for excused absences

A) Illness, Injury, or other insurmountable conditions
B) Illness or death of a member of the student’s immediate family
C) Recognized (or established) religious holidays and / or religious instruction
D) Medical appointments
E) Participation in an approved activity or class of instruction held at another site
F) Pre-arranged absences of educational value with the principal’s or attendance dean’s prior approval
G) Head Lice infestation (up to four days) during the school year
H) Catastrophic disasters that significantly impact the life of the student
(example: loss of residence from natural disaster)

Student absences are recorded as unexcused, until the parent provides a written notice within 48 hours of the student’s return to school. Notes received after the 48 hour notice will not be honored. Not all excuses are excused, even if the parent sends a note. E-mail or phoned in excuses will not be accepted. All notes have to be written and submitted with a parent signature and valid phone number for verification purposes.

Five tardies to school will be recorded as one unexcused absence.
•After five unexcused absences students will be in jeopardy of truant behavior intervention and will be notified by mail to be placed in an attendance contract
• After 10 unexcused absences students will be at risk by being referred to our school social worker and if behavior persists an order or petition for judicial truancy hearings will be conducted

Attendance troubles can lead to the loss of the following:
1)- Driver’s License, 2)- Government Aide (welfare), SSI Benefits, opportunities to enroll in Magnet programs & duel enrollment, H.S. graduation
